In the late 50s, Gibson designed a trio of futuristic-looking “Modernist” models that were intended to bring fresh, modern-looking designs to the product lineup. These included the Korina Flying V, the Korina Moderne, and the Korina Futura, the precursor of the Explorer. First exhibited at the 1957 NAMM Show in Futura form, the Explorer would eventually be released in 1958, along with the Flying V. While similar in appearance to the Explorer in shape, the Futura’s body contours were somewhat different, with a narrower, more angular body and a “split” headstock shape, which only a very few of the earliest Explorers retained before switching to the scimitar headstock design that we’re all familiar with today. Gibson made less than ten Futura prototypes, some with mahogany and others with Korina, and only a handful escaped into the wild, making it one of the rarest Gibson guitars and a highly sought-after collectible among vintage guitar connoisseurs. Radically “space age” in appearance when it was first presented to the world in 1957, the Futura was way ahead of its time. While it resembles the modern Explorer that the world has come to love, the Futura still has its own unique style, with enduring appeal and a timeless design that continues to captivate the imagination of guitarists and collectors worldwide.
