Gibson Songwriter Recording Artist Sunburst on It's side

The Gibson Songwriter Recording Artist is Back -And It's Built for the Stage and Studio

Gibson Songwriter Recording Artist and Songwriter Recording Artist EC

After a lengthy absence, one of Gibson's most distinctive acoustic designs has returned — and it's better than ever. The Gibson Songwriter Recording Artist and its cutaway sibling, the Songwriter Recording Artist EC, are back in the acoustic lineup, and they bring with them a compelling combination of vintage-inspired tone, premium materials, and pro-grade electronics. If you've been waiting for a serious acoustic that's equally at home in the studio and on the stage, this is the one.

A Silhouette Like No Other

Gibson Songwriter Recording Artist in Antique Natural

The Songwriter's calling card has always been its square shoulder modern dreadnought body — a silhouette that sits apart from the standard round-shoulder dreadnoughts and slope-shoulders that dominate the acoustic market. It's bold, it's purposeful, and it immediately signals that this isn't just another dreadnought. Since its debut in the late 1990s, the Songwriter body has attracted players who want a big, commanding voice with a look that stands out on any stage.

The tonal DNA here traces back to Gibson's golden era. The Songwriter Recording Artist draws from the legendary 1936 Advanced Jumbo, incorporating Gibson's revered scalloped Advanced X-bracing and a 25.5" long scale length to produce the kind of power, responsiveness, and dynamic range that serious players demand. This is not a casual strummer's guitar — it's a professional instrument built to inspire.

"The Songwriter Recording Artist delivers exceptional power, responsiveness, and dynamic range suited to professional-level performance."

Premium Tonewoods, Built in Bozeman

Handcrafted at Gibson's acoustic facility in Bozeman, Montana, the Songwriter Recording Artist is loaded with top-shelf materials. The foundation is a thermally aged Sitka spruce top — a process that accelerates the natural aging of the wood, giving you the opened-up, resonant response of a well-played vintage guitar right out of the case. Pair that with solid rosewood back and sides, and you get a tonal profile that's rich and full in the lows with articulate, singing highs.

The neck is a 25.5" scale mahogany neck with a comfortable Round profile, capped with a bound ebony fretboard featuring 20 standard frets and mother-of-pearl diamond eye inlays. The neck joins the body via a compound dovetail joint secured with hot hide glue — the traditional method that ensures long-term stability and optimal energy transfer from string to top. Up top, a bound headstock with rosewood veneer carries the Gibson logo and Crown inlaid in mother-of-pearl, paired with gold Grover® open-back tuners.

The bridge is ebony, fitted with a bone saddle, TUSQ® bridge pins with mother-of-pearl arrow inlays, and the top is finished off with a wide abalone rosette and a custom tortoise pickguard. Every detail here is intentional.

The EC: All of That, with a Cutaway

Gibson Songwriter Recording Artist EC in Rosewood Burst

The Songwriter Recording Artist EC takes everything above and adds an elegant cutaway body design that opens up the upper frets for lead players and anyone who wants the full expressive range of the instrument. If you're the kind of acoustic guitarist who ventures up the neck — and wants to be able to do it live without fighting the body — the EC is your guitar.

Spec-for-spec, the EC mirrors the non-cutaway model: same thermally aged Sitka top, same rosewood back and sides, same compound dovetail neck joint, same electronics. The cutaway doesn't sacrifice tone — it expands your options. Available in the same finishes as the standard model: Antique Natural and Rosewood Burst.

Plug In Without Compromise

Gibson Songwriter Recording Artist EC detail shot

One of the biggest differentiators on the Songwriter Recording Artist is the electronics package. Gibson spec'd these guitars with the L.R. Baggs™ HiFi system — dual bridge plate sensors feeding an internal preamp — and the result is a plugged-in sound that actually sounds like your guitar. String-to-string balance is excellent, dynamics are preserved, and feedback resistance is strong enough for live use without babysitting your monitor levels.

Soundhole-mounted volume and tone controls keep adjustments quick and unobtrusive — the audience won't even notice. Whether you're tracking in the studio or running direct at a gig, the Songwriter Recording Artist delivers a natural, authentic acoustic tone that doesn't require a lot of EQ surgery to get right.

"The sensors and preamp deliver a natural, authentic acoustic sound when plugged in — carefully voiced to work in tandem."

Why the Songwriter's Return Matters

There's a reason people have been asking about the Songwriter for years. The square shoulder dreadnought is genuinely unique in Gibson's catalog — it doesn't overlap with the J-45, the J-200, or the J-45 Standard. It's its own thing. And the Recording Artist trim level puts it squarely in professional territory: thermally aged top, hide glue neck joint, ebony board and bridge, bone nut and saddle, and premium electronics. That's a spec sheet that competes with anything in this price range.

Both models ship with a Gibson hardshell case, so they're road-ready from day one. If you're a working acoustic guitarist who needs one guitar that can handle studio sessions, live gigs, and everything in between — the Songwriter Recording Artist deserves a serious look.
