About This Item
The Lee Sklar Precision Bass recreates the heavily modified Precision Bass that became a central part of Sklar’s decades of session and touring work. Its alder body wears an Aged Natural Satin Heirloom nitrocellulose lacquer finish, referencing the stripped-to-bare-wood appearance of his original instrument while preserving the familiar Precision Bass body shape.
One of the defining features is its neck. Fender uses a maple neck with a 1962 Jazz Bass “C” profile, a relatively narrow 1.59" brass nut and a 7.25"-radius round-laminated rosewood fingerboard. Twenty mandolin-sized frets recreate another unusual modification from Sklar’s original bass, resulting in a distinctly different fretting feel from a conventional Precision Bass.
Two EMG Active Lee Sklar P pickups provide the electronics, with separate volume controls for the neck and bridge pickups plus a master tone control. This dual-P configuration is paired with active electronics, giving each pickup its own level control rather than using conventional pickup switching.
Sklar’s practical hardware modifications are represented throughout the instrument. A BadAss II bridge anchors the strings, while Gotoh reversed open-gear tuners are joined by a Hipshot BT3 Bass Xtender for quick low-string pitch changes. A custom brass retainer bar, Dunlop Straplok buttons and Heirloom nickel/chrome hardware complete this detailed tribute to Sklar’s working instrument.
