Before the “Legacy” name was finalized for production, these guitars were internally referred to as “Throwback” models, reflecting Taylor’s intentional move toward the feel, voicing, and visual identity of their earlier-era instruments.

That makes this prototype more than just a pre-production guitar. It captures a transitional moment in Taylor’s design philosophy, where the company began revisiting the warmth, openness, and more traditional tonal response that defined many of their older builds while still incorporating modern refinements.

Built around the classic dreadnought platform, the 810e Prototype Throwback pairs Indian rosewood back and sides with a Sitka spruce top for a broad, powerful voice with strong low-end support, articulate trebles, and rich overtone complexity. Compared to Taylor’s more modern, tightly controlled voicing, the Throwback/Legacy platform leans intentionally more open and relaxed, with a stronger emphasis on bloom and low-mid warmth.

Taylor’s updated bracing architecture and neck construction help preserve clarity and balance while allowing the guitar to feel more resonant and dynamically responsive under the hands. The dreadnought body shape gives the guitar exceptional headroom and projection, making it especially well-suited for flatpicking, vocal accompaniment, and players who want a fuller, room-filling acoustic voice.
