Every good acoustic has a voice you can hear from across the room. The trouble starts when you plug it in. Some of that color and air doesn't make it through the cable, and the guitar you love at home turns into a flatter version of itself on stage.

HiFi DNA is Gibson and Baggs working on that problem together. It's a new bridge plate pickup system designed by Baggs (the company most players still call LR Baggs, renamed in September 2026 for its 50th anniversary) and it now comes factory-installed in a wide range of Gibson acoustics from the Original and Modern Collections.

A lighter, more sensitive sensor

HiFi DNA mounts on the bridge plate inside the guitar and reads the movement of the top directly. Baggs made the new sensors lighter, larger, and more flexible, and they pick up vibration from every direction. Less mass lets them follow the top more closely, so more of the guitar's natural voice and dynamic range makes it into the signal.

In practice that means the stuff you feel when you play unplugged: the breath on a soft fingerpicked passage, the bloom when you dig in, and the difference between a J-45 and a Hummingbird.

Two sensors, two preamps

This is the big engineering change. HiFi DNA uses two sensors, one tuned for the low end and one for the highs, and each gets its own custom-voiced, all-discrete Class A preamp. Each signal is shaped on its own before the two are blended into a single output.

Think of it like miking a guitar with two microphones and giving each its own channel strip before you mix. Baggs says this keeps both signals clean and articulate, and it gave their engineers more precise control over the final voicing.

Built for real stages

Bridge plate pickups are known for sounding natural, and players always want to know how they hold up when the monitors get loud. According to Baggs, HiFi DNA's resistance to feedback is comparable to their Element under-saddle pickup, so it's designed to work at a coffee shop open mic and in front of a full band.

The preamp mounts just inside the soundhole, with simple volume and tone controls right at your fingertips. A single 9V battery is rated for more than 700 hours of playing.

Gibson x Baggs HiFi DNA pickup system

HiFi DNA is rolling out across Gibson's Original and Modern Collection acoustics. The lineup includes versions of these models:

Put HiFi DNA in the guitar you already own

Baggs also makes HiFi DNA as a standalone pickup system, and we carry it. It's built for steel-string and 12-string acoustics (Baggs doesn't recommend it for nylon-string guitars). The sensors peel and stick to the bridge plate with an included jig, so there's no drilling or changes to the bridge or saddle. Like the factory-installed version, the preamp with its volume and tone controls mounts just inside the soundhole, and the 9V battery is rated for more than 700 hours.
